Much to most of our friends’ and relatives’ amazement (or horror), we have just bought an Airdale puppy, four weeks before my due date with my first child.
The main concern has been that the workload with what’s effectively two newborns is going to be too much to bear, but having thought long and hard about it, and having spoken with dog experts, we believe that while it might be tough in the first instance, the benefits of having both a dog and a baby simultaneously far outweigh the additional work it will entail.
We will have to be super vigilant when it comes to training the puppy, and we will, of course, never leave him alone with the baby, but the routine of walks in the fresh air will be great for my partner, our child and me, especially in those winter months when it might be tempting, as a new mother or otherwise, to sit indoors.
I can understand why dogs would make children more active. They encourage play and regular family exercise, which is something I’m hoping for in abundance.
